Media streaming is convenient because you can enjoy the media on the spur of the moment without having to download any files. To have this convenience, however, you sacrifice the ability to watch or listen to the video or audio at a later date – unless you 'capture' the Web stream. A number of software applications are available for Mac computers that allow the user to capture Web streams, ranging from stand-alone programs to browser-based applications. All of these solutions only require the Web stream's URL.

VLC

VLC is a free, open source application that functions as a standard media player and also allows Mac users to capture audio and video Web streams. To begin capturing a stream with VLC, launch the program, click the 'File' menu and select the 'Open Network..' option. Paste the URL of the stream in the designated field and tick the 'Streaming/Saving' option. Click the 'Settings' button and place a checkmark next to the 'File' and 'Display the Stream Locally' option. Select 'MPEG 4' as the encapsulation method and click the 'OK' button. Click the 'Open' button to open the network and save the Web stream.

WireTap

WireTap is a downloadable program that can be used to record any audio being played through your Mac computer. Recording a Web stream involves opening a Web browser and navigating to the stream's URL. Then, open WireTap and select the 'Mac Audio' option from the source menu. Click the 'Record' button to begin recording the Web stream. WireTap will also record any other sounds generated by your Mac computer, so you may want to shut down other applications while recording.
