The title of this carefully crafted history is apt. James J. Weingartner, an expert on the actions of Waffen SS soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, has produced an engrossing account of Willis M. Everett, an Atlanta attorney who saved those selfsame Germans from execution after the war. In seeking social prominence in the interwar years, Everett obtained an army reserve officer's commission, which earned him rapid promotions after 1941 in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. He worked out of the Atlanta Post Office in counterintelligence, disposing of such burning wartime issues as reports of Japanese balloon bombs landing in the South (of which there were none).

Following the defeat of Nazi Germany, 74 former SS men, including Jochen Peiper and SS Gen. Sepp Dietrich, were tried by a U.S. Military Tribunal for War Crimes concerning the massacre. The two month trial began May 16, 1946, in a courthouse at Dachau. But controversy soon arose.
